My next assembly

I have an up and coming school assembly where I intend to show the following video:

And then say this:

I meet many guys who make it their ambition to have big wallets or big muscles or a big brain or a partner who is big in the beauty stakes or a big name.  I don't think I have ever met a guy who has told me that it is his ambition to have a big heart, a strong, caring, protecting heart...

If you were doing the assembly, where would you take it from here?

I'd ask for a show of hands - what do you want to be, what is your ambition?

Hmm... a classic teacher tool! Thanks for that. ;-)

Hi Richard,

As requested here are my thoughts, not had time for much contemplation, so these are a first reaction.

I am not a great fan of cheesy american videos, but I did find it very moving. It reminded me of the recent Paralympic games were many of the cyclist rode with on tandem bikes with an able bodied guide, who did not try to claim glory for themseleves. It terms of the statement you want to make to your Kids, I can believe it when you say "I don't think I have ever met a guy who has told me that it is his ambition to have a big heart, a strong, caring, protecting heart..." but that is because they have never said it, people who possess that sentiment will not think to advertise it or may not even recognise it within themseleves. I have met many people like that and count you as one of them. You should ask your school kids what type of person they see themselves as, and ask what has given them greater joy, their materialistic desires, or the things they have done to help family and friends.

Regards, Donal
